[PC] My thoughts on the default keyboard keybinds. Am I alone on any of these? Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:34 AM PST I've been playing ark since about 6 months after the beta launched and ever since then, I've always hated the default keyboard layout. I changed it on day 1 and never looked back. Let me know what you guys think of my thoughts on these binds and what I change them to.
INVENTORY A bold one to start this list off with I'm sure, but this is something that irritates the hell out of me in all games. WHY is the #1 most frequently opened interface in all of gaming universally opened with a key of the opposite end of the keyboard from where your hand is? I don't care if the name of the interface starts with "I", something that frequently used should be placed right next to WASD. Minecraft had the right idea and placed it on "E", and ever since playing Minecraft, I have always put it there on every game. For bonus points, Inventory going on "E" serves an additional purpose in Ark, which is a good segway into the next button.
INTERACTION This is labeled "Use" ingame, but it does much more than that and we all know it. It opens chests, it picks berries, you use it to grab your first handful of stones off the beach, and to the tragedy of anyone who lifts their hand off their keyboard at any point while flying, it mounts and dismounts you from your dino. Yea, you can probably see why I hate this default key. For me personally, because I place Inventory on "E" in every game, I place this keybind on "F" in every game. It just feels natural to me. So that's where I put it when I first launched the game.
I then spent my first year in the game wondering why everyone always has the problem of jumping off their flyers and falling to their death. It wasn't until Wildcard started resetting everyone's keybinds with almost every update that I was reminded of the original keybind and then put two and two together. And now I make changing this keybind a requirement for anyone joining my tribe to use any fliers they didnt tame and claim for themselves as their personal flier.
CROUCH Here's another key I changed because of Minecraft. I put this on shift. I do this on every game. Not much more to say here. This one is just personal preference.
ACCESS OTHER'S INVENTORY This is default to "F". but I put something else on "F". I also use this key quite often. So I place it on "C". Right below WASD where I like it.
SPRINT I put crouch on shift, so this one gets bumped down to ctrl. Still easy to access.
SELFIE CAM I have no need for this key, so I unbind it and I place the next key on it.
TOGGLE SPRINT I put Sprint on ctrl, so I place this on alt. Close by, but far enough away to not mix them up.
EXTENDED HUD and GRAB BODY These are on "H" and "G" respectively by default, but I use Extended HUD far more often, so I simply switch these two keys so it is closer to WASD. Sue me :)
TOGGLE CONSOLE Why Wildcard? Why is this on Tab? LITERALLY every single other game in existence places this on "`". You followed the industry standard for Inventory but not this? Why?
ORBITAL CAM (AKA K-CAM) I use this key quite often, usually when holding "W". So having it on the other side of the keyboard is a no-go for me. So I put it on the newly relocated Tab key.
PRESS Z TO POOP Why was this moved? I actually use this quite a bit. It is helpful in early game fertilizer collection before you get toilets and dung beetles. It is helpful when riding a dino you poop before going into a battle so you dont get stunned for a few seconds to take a squat while some giant creature is trying to rip your face off. And it is also helpful in a more unconventional way. This is my universal "Did I loose connection to the server?" button. This feature was way more useful back in the day when Wildcard's servers were constantly laggy for everyone, but it is still nice to have. If you can poop and you have connection, you will poop. If you don't have to poop, you get a message saying to at the top of your screen. If your connection to the server is lost or lagging, neither of these will happen.
SET TAME GROUP This key is why POOP was moved. So I figure "all the actual tame group buttons are on the numpad, so why not put this there too?" So I placed this on the numpad "." button. I think it makes sense, maybe you do too.
WHISTLES I saved the best for last. I have always felt like the placement of all the whistles are random at best. They are so scattered across the keyboard. So I like to group them all together. First off, I use an MMO mouse (the ones with 12 keys on the side), so I place two of these on the 11 and 12 keys of my mouse. 12 gets used for "you follow me". Having this key on my mouse makes it much easier IMO to point it at a dino and hit the key. Furthermore, holding this key will bring up a radial wheel with all the other whistles on it. Also helpful to have on my mouse, as you use the radial wheel with your mouse.
Next we have a what I see as the opposite of telling something to follow me, telling them to stop following me. But I never like using the single target version of this. So I place the "All stop" key on 11 on my mouse, right next to 12. Besides, this key is quite handy in the field so I want quick access to it at all times.
Then we have aggression whistles. I like to group these together on the F5-F7 keys in the order of passive, neutral, and then aggressive. I can't remember if they added a "flee if attacked" whistle, but if they did, I would either put it on F8 or put it on F5 and slide the other 3 one key to the right so they are all in order of magnitude.
Finally, I like to place the "All follow me" whistle on F10. I don't like it on F9 because it is way too easy to accidentally hit when you are in the middle of your megabase....yea we've all been there. But I do like to be able to use it in the field, so I don't like to completely unbind it. It makes it easy to quickly tell a dino to follow you in a pinch if, say, it is being attacked or something like that. It is also quite helpful for commanding more than one dino, especially something like a flock of dimorhpodons, as well as spamming the key to find a lost dino [link] [comments]
Tribe Membership while transferring servers help Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:16 PM PST I'm in tribe A on the island. I jump to Ragnarok and am part of tribe B. When I upload then transfer back to the island I am no longer in tribe A. I am listed as being in the tribe according to the admin but in my info it shows that I am not and I can't do anything I would normally be able to do if I were in the tribe. The admin is having to remove me from the tribe and re invite me to get things working normally again. Same thing happens when I go back to ragnarok. I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work?? Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]

Single Player save file gets extremely large before crashing Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:42 PM PST This has happened to me twice now - only on the Island, but I usually use that map as my home base so it could be an issue with other maps too. Things seem to run fine until I reach mid-level-70 to level 80. Then, my 'TheIsland.Ark' file gets extremely large, extremely quickly. Saving starts to take a long time, lag gets worse, until finally the game gets too large to save (over 2 GB) and just crashes on me. I'm not sure what's causing this. I haven't built any buildings recently so new structures can't be the cause. I wiped wild dinos in case there were any overspawns. I thought maybe it was my number of tames and so cryopodded 95% of them. But the map file size and saving issues remain. This has happened twice now on the island, after I have built up quite a nice spot for myself and am really starting to progress in-game and look forward to things like boss fights and end games. After putting that many hours into a file just to have it suddenly stop working is extremely disheartening, and since it's happened twice now I know it's not a fluke. Has anybody else encountered this? Does anybody know a fix? I'd really appreciate any advice I can get right now. Thanks. Edit: I don't know if it's relevant, but I play on a single player cluster, and each time this has happened once I return to the Island after spending a lot of time on another map. That might just be coincidence though. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:00 PM PST How do you fix inventory bugs? Currently I cant pick up items and several of the ones in my inventory aren't visible for example a monkey head and stack of element. [link] [comments]
Single Player crash: FMemoryWriter does not support data larger than 2GB. Posted: 15 Nov 2020 08:37 PM PST Twice this has happened to me on The Island, for two separate SP characters: the game suddenly starts to lag every 15-20 minutes when it autosaves, and then eventually stops saving altogether and I get this error message. I'm unable to do any more progress because it won't save. I've tried wiping dinos, destroying extra beehives, cryopoding all my dinos, but for some reason my 'TheIsland.ark' file has just increased dramatically over the last couple of days. Has anyone else experienced this crash? Can anyone give me some advice? [link] [comments]
Regular megalosaurus for rockwell fight Posted: 15 Nov 2020 07:37 PM PST I have a question regarding transporting into the Rockwell arena, and with an army of normal Megalos. (Around 19 of them) I'm aware that you can transfer a normal dinosaur to Aberration, so long as it has an aberrant variant (ex. Megalosaurus, spinos, etc.) and I am aware that radiation does damage normal variants, but not aberrant ones. However since aberration is a story ark, creature levels are always usually low, so I tamed normal 150 megalos to breed an army on Ragnarok. My question is, if I transport the whole army into the arena by using a supply drop in the green zone or surface terminal, it would work because there's no radiation in either of those areas, and it would also transport my megalos into that same location, correct? Or, if I used a supply drop, killed Rockwell, and teleported out, would it teleport my megalos to the rockwell terminal, where there is radiation that could kill them? I know the ascension cutscene will play, and the game will automatically put me and whatever is in my inventory into an ark data transfer, but will my megalos be teleported out to the area where I used a supply drop/surface terminal? I'm just conflicted and I don't know if when the megalos teleport out of the arena, if it will teleport them to the rockwell terminal, or to the location of the supply drop (even if it isnt there when I return) and/or surface terminal depending on which of the 2 I used to transport in the arena. Sorry for the jumbled mess but I'd appreciate a guiding hand. [link] [comments]

Can someone help me find a giga on ark island Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:29 PM PST
Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:20 PM PST As the title says, I've been having an issue with my cursor. It was working pretty well a couple hours before but now it's just not there. Whenever I'm tryna craft, in the main menu and so on. Has anyone managed to fix this? I've look online but all I see are methods that came out years ago which either doesn't work or I can't follow since it's in older windows format. I've already tried restarting the game itself and my computer. [link] [comments] |
