SinglePlayer Guide for Beginners on Console (Redux)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 12:46 AM PST

This is a comprehensive guide for if you're interested in playing Ark as a singleplayer game (and you don't have access to mods). This post is going to be a long one but will hopefully be shorter and easier to understand than the one I made last year (although a lot of people seem to have appreciated that one too). Some of that old post is just going to be copied over into this one and updated with changes I've made in my own playstyle since then. First I'm going to offer some recommended settings to use before you start your game and after that I'll offer some guidance on what to do in this game since the game itself offers so little direction at first.

But before that, let me briefly explain why any of this is even necessary. If you haven't played any online survival games before, Ark is a game that is designed around the idea that the servers are running 24/7 and the game continues even when you're not playing. Fun concept but what this means is that the whole game is designed around a foundation of wasting your time in order to get anything done. And I don't even mean that it forces you to grind for experience or resources like an MMO (although it does that too). I mean that so many game mechanics just revolve around waiting for timers to count down. If you're the kind of person that agrees that it's pretty unacceptable to wait TEN real life hours to obtain a T-rex (that's AFTER going through the actual challenge of knocking it unconscious without dying) then you should follow this guide. The multiplayer design really doesn't translate well into a singleplayer game, but this game actually can be a fantastic singleplayer game if you know how to tweak it. The philosophy of this guide is that your time is valuable, and that you want to be able to actually accomplish something when you sit down for a few hours to play.

(Also note that there IS a checkbox in the settings that says "Use Singlepayer Settings" but I don't recommend using that because in a lot of ways it makes the game too easy in not-fun ways. But if you just want to play immediately, you can skip my recommended settings and go down to the gameplay tips.)

    \*Recommended General Settings*\**

When you first open Ark you'll need to select "Host/Local" to play on single player. There are three tabs in the menu you are shown. These settings are found under the General tab. Any settings that you don't see listed in this post should be left at the default setting.

    - Difficulty: 1

    - Player Resistance: 0.5

    - XP Multiplier: 10 (This is deliberately very high. I'm going to explain why further down in the post)

    - Taming Speed: 5 \*(more if you desire, see below)***

    - Harvest Amount: 3

    - Player Character Food Drain: 2

    - Dino Character Food Drain: 10 (Only do this if you want to have to feed your dinos fairly often. I do but not everyone does.)

    - Maximum Difficulty: This is a checkbox. Check it to enable maximum difficulty. This will allow creatures in the wild to sometimes spawn with higher levels, the highest wild level being 150 (180 for tek dinos). Higher level creature make the game more interesting, because the closer to level 1 a creature is the more identical they are to other members of their species. Stats are randomized for wild creatures, so the higher the level, the more unique their strengths and weaknesses are. This will not make the game much more difficult on its own.

    - Disable Structure Placement Collision: Check this box

    - Allow Multiple Platform Floors: Check this box

    - Allow Unlimited Respecs: Check this box

    - Show Creative Mode: Check this box. Creative mode is an option available in the pause menu. When activated it will make you invincible, allow you craft and build anything for free, and it can be toggled on and off at any time. You want this option to be available for when you experience a bug, even if you don't plan on using it to cheat or experiment or anything. Turning creative mode on and off in the pause menu will also temporarily teach you all of the engrams (crafting recipes) in the game until the next time you exit and reload the game.

    \*Recommended Advanced Settings*\**

A lot of the settings under this tab you can ignore, so just scroll down until you see the ones I've listed here.

    - Non Permanent Diseases: Check this box

    - Force Allow Cave Fliers: Check this box

    - Override Structure Platform Prevention: Check this box

(The following are under "world settings", in case you get lost scrolling up and down the tab)

    - Poop Interval: 10

    - Lay Egg Interval: 0.5

    - Mating Interval: 0.02

    - Egg Hatch Speed: 50 12 (I changed this setting with Reapers in mind. When you get impregrnated by a Reaper, you'll have 12 hours to gain XP while it is inside of you which only came out to like 14 minutes at 50x hatch speed. So with this setting you'll have about one hour to gather XP for a reaper pregnancy, and a Giga egg (which normally takes 50 hours and is the longest egg hatch time) will take about 4 hours to hatch. Most everything else should still only take minutes to hatch.)

    - Baby Mature Speed: 50

    - Harvest Health: 4

    - Baby Cuddle Interval Multiplier: 0.012 (Again, I know these seem drastic, but trust me. I'll explain later if you want to know)

    - Baby Imprinting Stat Scale Multiplier: 1.5 (When you 100% imprint on a baby its stats are boosted by 30%, and 45% when you ride it. However, because of some fuckery with the algorithm, when you shorten mature speed and imprint times it will sometimes result in it being impossible to 100% imprint a baby depending on the species. So, to compensate for this loss I have slightly boosted this setting so that even imperfect imprints are still worth doing.)

    - Day Cycle Speed: 0.5 (This setting makes days and nights twice as long, because they seemed too short for my taste. There are also separate sliders for changing the length of day and night individually if you want.)

    - Spoiling Time: 3

    - Item Decomposition Time: 3

    - Corpse Decomposition Time: 3

    - No Resource Radius - Player: 0.5

    - No Resource Radius - Structures: 0.3 \(When you build, your house prevents things like trees from respawning near it. This setting allows things to respawn closer to it so that you don't accidentally salt the earth with your structures, so to speak. I like trees around my houses, so that's why this setting is so low.)**

    - Crop Growth Speed: 3

    - Crop Decay Speed: 3

(The following is under "Wild Dinos Add Per Level")

    - Health: 2

(The following are under "Tamed Dinos Add Per Level")

    - Health: 0.2

    - Weight: 5

(The following is under "Player Stats Per Level")

    Weight: 50

\(This will allow you to have a carry weight of about 600 pounds if you level your weight up once, and about 1000 if you do it twice. I don't recommend leveling weight up more than twice. Weight management is objectively not fun in this game because crafting requirements are so high, however you will still have to think twice about how much you're carrying once you gain some rideable dinosaurs, because they won't have such boosted weight stats as you do. This is a balanced way to play, I think.)**

(The following are under "Miscellaneous Settings")

    - Passive Def Hurt Riderless Dinos: Check this box. It might be checked by default, I just forgot if it was or not.

    - Allow Custom Recipes: Check this box. Please refer to the wiki for how to use the cooking pot.

    - Allow Raid Dino Feeding: Check this box. It'll allow you to keep gigantic dinos that are usually temporary like the Titans or Titanosaur.

    - Raid Dino Food Drain Multiplier: 10 (Again, this is a personal preference. It will make you need to feed these gigantic dinos more often)

    - Custom Recipe Skill Factor: 2

    - Crafting Skill Bonus Multiplier: 4

    - Supply Crate Loot Quality: 2

    - Fishing Loot Quality: 2

    - Increase Platform Structure Limit: 1000 (This number is large enough that you'll probably never reach the build limit on platforms, but keep in mind that building very large structures may cause drops in framerate. Don't be afraid to push the limits, but keep that in mind.)

If you use these settings then the game should feel a lot more balanced for singleplayer, and it will definitely not waste your time as much as it normally would. Now I just need to explain something kind of controversial about my personal play style and why I think you should also play this way. You see, Ark has engrams which are basically crafting recipes. Every time you level up you get some points to spend on Engrams and therefor can learn how to make more stuff. Here's the problem. No single person can learn all of the Engrams, and that's a problem for singleplayer. Sure, there is a potion called a mindwipe tonic that you can use to forget all of your Engrams and choose different ones instead, but this is tedious and generally not an interesting way to deal with it. So I say we get around that.

    **HOW TO FORGET ABOUT ENGRAMS*\*

So in this game you can find things called blueprints, which are crafting recipes you can use to craft the same things that you would learn how to make with Engrams. But it's better to have a blueprint than an Engram because blueprints come in higher qualities. That means you can make a better gun or helmet with a blueprint than you could with just knowing the Engram for it, and you can make them even better if you level up your crafting skill. So anytime you find a blueprint in a loot drop (unless it's something that doesn't come in higher qualities like a crop plot or any structure really) you should collect them and keep the best ones.

Now what I'm about to suggest is going to be controversial and is also kind of complicated if you're completely new to Ark, so I think I'll recommend not doing this until you get to the point that you don't have enough engrams to learn how to make all the things that you want. But we're going to use admin commands.

To access admin commands on PS4 just open the pause menu and press SQUARE, TRIANGLE, R1, R2, L1, and L2 at the same time and a text box will appear at the top of the screen (admin commands do not disable trophies, if you care about that). You can use admin commands to cheat in a lot of ways but that's not really what we're doing here. What I do with my character is I use the admin command GIVEENGRAMS to teach myself all the engrams in the game. When you save and exit, and then reload the game you'll find that some of the engrams are missing. What this does is teaches you every crafting recipe that you can craft without any workbenches. In order to craft something that you need a workbench to craft (such as aTyrannosaurus saddle which needs to be crafted in a Smithy) you'll need to use a blueprint. Saddle blueprints can be found in drops, but you can spawn in primitive (default) blueprints for saddles using admin commands as you need them, and you can do the same for items that don't normally drop blueprints (such as a Fabricator). You can use the Ark Wiki to find the admin spawn command for any blueprints you would need, but if this sounds too complicated then you can ignore this part of the guide. This is just how I prefer to play because I don't think it's fun to not be able to craft things that I need even if I have the resources to do it.

    Okay, now to gameplay tips

    ***GAMEPLAY**\*

I'm going to assume that you're aware of the basic mechanics of the game, but if you're not then I'll link to another post with more detailed gameplay tips here once I get around to writing it. When you first get started you're going to want to play this game like Minecraft. Punch some trees, pick some berries, and gather enough materials to make an axe so you can gather wood to make a thatch hut so that you don't get murdered when the sun goes down. Your first big goal beyond keeping yourself alive is going to be taming a dinosaur (preferably one you can ride). I always recommend trying to tame every Moschops you see at first because they're excellent resource gatherers and if you're lucky they can be tamed with only some Mejoberries. But once you learn how to craft a bola and a club then you should tame the first highest level Parasaur you can find. These dinos can carry a lot of weight and can scare off raptors with a honking ability that you can use while riding them. A good Parasaur will help you actually start to explore the island.

I'm going to write an entirely other post with a detailed breakdown of tips and longterm goals you can use for a singleplayer breakthrough, but this post and my recommended game settings should give you a pretty damn good start in the right direction. Let me know if you have any specific questions in the comments so I can have a better idea of what to add in my next post.
